Why the need for facility chaplain care?
Facilities offer support for elderly communities on so many
different levels. They provide community through lunches,
friendships between staff and residents, and activities. They
provide for physical dimension of individuals by offering
caregivers, nurses, dieticians, and therapists. They provide
social workers to help with various problems. At times
facilities expect the individual's pastors to continue support
but unfortunately this is often not the case. Still other
pastors visit but don't offer the spiritual care the resident is
desiring. Facilities often times have churches that come in and
provide worship services but that is the extent of their
spiritual care. However, a chaplain can pick up where the church
left off.
We are clinically trained to sit with individuals
regardless of their faith background and provide support. Along
with this training, we have experiences of working in
various facilities and places and understand some of the needs
of individuals in retirement communities. Chaplains help provide
that listening ear to all who are in need, without judgment or
pushing their own agenda.
Staff Care
A healthy staff has better patient care and there is a higher
morale in the work place. Often times in serving others, the
staff is forgotten about. A staff member may need support for
many different reasons such as when a resident dies, becomes
terminally ill, or leaves, when the staff member has something
happen to a loved one, when the staff member is experiencing
their own personal problems, or when there is a conflict between
several staff members. We also build
relationships with staff members, so that when an staff member
has a need there is a caring relationship already established. A
chaplain can help take care of the staff in order that they take
care of others more efficiently. We are also able to give
seminars to your organization such as religious and cultural
awareness, suicide prevention training, self-care, and other
seminar briefings to help equip your staff.
How does it work?
Chaplains will visit the facility on a regular basis dependent
upon the needs and requests of the facility. Usually in the
start of care, the chaplain will check in with the staff to see
how they are doing and see if there is any resident that may
need special attention because of events happening in their
life. Then the chaplain also goes to the different rooms and
groups and interacts with the residents, getting to know them,
listening to their story, and encouraging them in their faith.
Some chaplains will eat lunch with the residents, and can
perform Bible study and worship experiences for the facility.
The chaplain is also available to any staff that may want to
talk about their concerns.
What are the benefits of facility chaplain care?
There are many benefits on having a facility chaplain using
Fulfilled Life:
- Resident support - residents have a chaplain who regularly
visits and shows interest in them, helping them feel more
connected to the spiritual community, feeling a sense of
purpose, and receiving comfort and support
- Staff care - chaplains help provide the staff with support
showing that their company cares about them creating higher
morale, less turn-over, a sense of belonging, and better
resident care
- Spiritual care - Fulfilled life offers a variety of spiritual
care services from prayer and Bible study, to listening and
encouraging, to religious rites and memorial services
- Marketing - once a facility enters into a contract with a
chaplain, the facility can rightly add to their services that
they offer spiritual support along beside the list of the many
services that they offer
- Affordability - because a facility can contract with a
chaplain for certain amount of time, the facility can save money
by not having to worry about benefits (salary, medical benefits,
retirement plans) of the chaplain while still receiving the
benefits of spiritual care
- Confidentiality - a chaplain is a safe place to share
providing confidentiality
