Why the need for elderly chaplain care?
In the state of 2009 demographic report in South Carolina, the
Lt. Governor's Office on Aging has stated that 86% of its
elderly lack support. While serving as a hospice chaplain, it
has been seen that the majority of elderly that are shut-ins,
those in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and in
retirement communities very often do not get the support that
they desire especially from churches. We have seen churches only
send deacons to pick up tithes checks, churches neglect shut-ins
because the individual has been unable to go to church since the
pastor has taken over, or some pastors do not have time or know
how to do effect personal spiritual care. However, there are
some cases in which churches are a great support to individuals,
but someone "on the outside" may be needed because the
individual is so close to their church body and pastor that they
may not want to share their fears, questions, or "junk". A
chaplain can minister on several different levels, connecting to
individuals from a variety of spiritual backgrounds.
How does it work?
Chaplains provide very personalized care by visiting the elderly
in various living conditions (homes, communities). The chaplain
will listen to their stories and their faith, encourage them,
share Scriptures, devotions, or religious rites (communion),
pray for them, and spend time with them.
What are the benefits of elderly chaplain care?
There are several benefits of having a chaplain serve you or
your loved one:
- Validation - each life matters and each life is important!
- Purpose - a chaplain can help find purpose regardless of
circumstances
- Comfort - individuals may feel alone and a chaplain can help
individuals feel more connected to a faith community
- Support - a chaplain can help provide support and help in
times of need or questioning
- Confidentiality - whatever is shared between an individual and
a chaplain is confidential
Who do you serve?
We serve the elderly population by visiting shut-ins, those in
nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and in retirement
communities. We also will visit regardless of disease process
(Alzheimer's/Dementia, Cancer patients, etc). We are also
willing to work with sitter services in helping complete the
circle of care that they provide. Individuals or their family
members can arrange care for a loved one or themselves by
contacting
a chaplain in your local area.
