Chaplain FAQ
What is a chaplain?
We all long for meaning and
purpose. In experiencing life, situations can bring focus and
clarity or may bring many conflicting feelings. The chaplain can
help you identify your own strengths and help assign meaning in
the midst of life in a way that feels authentic and satisfying
to you.
A chaplain assists with
spiritual needs of people for all walks of life and varying
religious backgrounds and worldviews. They will provide support
regardless of your religious affiliation. The chaplains
affiliated with Fulfilled Life are clinically trained and
experienced to minister to various backgrounds and
circumstances.
What can I except from the
chaplain?
Chaplains offer open, sensitive,
non-judgmental presence and an acceptance of different beliefs,
cultures, and values. Issues of meaning, spiritual pain,
forgiveness, hope, and relationships become more focused during
periods of trying circumstances. Trained chaplains will offer
supportive presence, listening, and appropriate interventions
for spiritual care and support to patients and family members.
What if the chaplain is not
affiliated with my religious tradition?
Your chaplain is not here to
evangelize you, to recruit members for their congregation, or
change your religious tradition. Your chaplain has been trained
and will respect your faith tradition and help you explore how
your own spirituality can be a source of comfort and hope. A
good chaplain should be able to sit down with an individual from
any faith tradition and still have a meaningful encouraging
encounter.
What if I am not religious?
Not all of us are religious, but
we all have spiritual journeys and resources. Spirituality
simply defined is how we define life and can include how we
think of and connect to God or a Higher Power, others, and
ourselves. We are all connected in this story of Life. What
gives you a sense of awe, of wonder, of gratitude, of belonging?
A chaplain is not here to tell
you what or how to believe, think, or feel. We are here to help
determine your own beliefs and how to use them as a resource for
coping and connecting. The chaplain will respect your way of
life and encourage you to resolve any issues that are causing
difficulty for you or your family.
Will the chaplain replace my
Minister or Pastor?
Chaplains don’t take the place
of your minister or pastor of your church. You can choose to
seek guidance from your own spiritual counselor, the chaplain,
or both. The chaplain will work alongside any church leader to
ensure you receive all the support you need.
Confidentiality
Your
chaplain is here to listen with a caring and open heart. Their
job is to create a safe place to share what is troubling you.
The conversations that you have with the chaplain are held with
the utmost respect and confidence. There is one exception. The
chaplain is legally bound to disclose to appropriate persons if
you are in danger of hurting yourself or someone else.
